Bank M&A Quarterly | Q4 2023 Edition

Greetings:

 

There really isn’t another way to describe the big picture of bank M&A volume and deal size this year other than underwhelming – unless of course, you are among the few doing a deal right now.   For you, this is a critical juncture in how your institution will execute, position and demonstrate a future vision to remain competitive.

 

Despite low volumes, this quarter has resulted in some interesting content as we read good thought leadership pieces on topics that matter to bank leaders thinking about how they will remain viable in areas like…

  • BAU: Pending regulation impacts, market rate forecasts, evolving behavior changes in the consumer, fraud, emerging tech and re-energizing pipelines for new business; and
  • M&A: Deal pricing, evaluating MOE’s, sources of long-term growth and talent acquisition.

…and we think we found some good POVs for you to scan.

 

To wrap up the year, I also want to credit Steve Williams at Cornerstone Advisors for his concise bank leadership assessment (in their Gonzo Banker Newsletter from November). I regularly enjoy hearing or reading their perspectives and felt this one was particularly relevant considering the challenge to identify the next generation of leadership and the need for rapid adaption to changes facing the industry today.

 

I hope you enjoy the reading and as always, I would enjoy hearing from any of you that have specific thoughts on specific M&A topics or general industry insights or perspectives you would like to share.
